Our Company

Is Don Lee Farms family-owned?

Yes: a third-generation, family-owned American food company founded in 1982. Read our story.

What's Don Lee Farms' history with plant-based and alternative proteins?

It goes back generations. In 1972, Larry's of Gardena, California, founded by Larry, was the first processor to build the new spun soy protein fiber into a line of pre-cooked meat products, work documented in Food Product Development in May 1972. Larry's son Donald carried that expertise forward later that decade. The family's third generation and Don Lee Farms helped shape the plant-based category with early veggie, soy, and pea-based burgers, and in the early-to-mid 2010s developed and manufactured plant-based burgers for multinational brands and emerging companies, helping build the category that became today's market. We also developed one of the first organic plant-based burgers built to match the taste and texture of beef, and still make organic, vegetable-based options today. More on our role in plant-based.

What are your sustainability initiatives?

In addition to local and federal requirements, we:

  • Prioritize local sourcing within 200 miles of our California and Texas facilities, including key raw materials, to cut transportation emissions and support local growers.
  • Our certified-organic ingredients (organic since 2012) promote responsible on-farm resource use, healthier soil and water, and fewer synthetic inputs.
  • Offer certified-organic and non-GMO options across our lineup.
  • Design recipes with the sustainability of ingredients in mind.
  • Recapture steam from cooking and reuse it for facility sanitation.
  • Operate rigorous on-site wastewater treatment.
  • Recycle corrugated cardboard across our operations.
  • Completed our transition from plastic to compostable packaging for our bowl items in 2025.
  • Rescue and donate edible food, contributing millions of meals through over 60 partner agencies to keep good food out of the waste stream.
How does Don Lee Farms give back?

Giving back is part of the business. Through annual events with the LA Rams, the City of Inglewood, and the LA Regional Food Bank, we’ve donated millions of meals over 40+ years.

What food-safety certifications do your facilities hold?

Our facilities are USDA-inspected, FDA-registered, and SQF-audited for food safety.

Do you offer private label or co-manufacturing?
